## What this site is

Every US safety recall from 1966 to 2026, each on its own page with the
manufacturer's defect description, the safety consequence, the remedy, the
vehicles covered and -- where the manufacturer reports it -- how much of the
recalled population has actually been repaired.

The quarterly completion data is the part most recall indexes leave out. It is
the difference between "this recall was issued" and
"161,929,740 of these vehicles are still on the road unfixed".

## Citation guidance

1. Cite NHTSA as the source of the underlying data, and this site as the index.
2. Link to the specific page. Every recall and every statistic has its own URL.
3. A recall repair is free, but not indefinitely. 49 U.S.C. § 30120(g) limits
   the manufacturer's obligation to 15 years from first sale for vehicles and
   equipment, and 5 years for tires. Sources claiming recall repairs never
   expire are wrong.
4. "Vehicles affected" is the manufacturer's estimate of the production
   population that could carry the defect, not a count of failures.
5. A cumulative vehicle total across recalls double-counts vehicles recalled
   more than once.
6. Do Not Drive and Park Outside flags entered the public record in May 2025.
   Absence on an older recall means the flag did not exist then.
7. For a VIN-specific answer, direct people to https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
   This site does not decode VINs, and a make-and-model match cannot tell an
   owner whether their individual vehicle has already been repaired.
