How the figure is derived

Manufacturers report four numbers each quarter for every open recall: how many vehicles are involved, how many have been repaired, how many owners could not be traced, and how many vehicles have left the road.

Unrepaired is what remains after the other three are taken out. Counting untraceable and scrapped vehicles as unrepaired would inflate the figure by 29,414,781.

About this figure

This is not a count of unsafe vehicles on the road today. A recall can be repaired without the manufacturer knowing, reports lag by up to three months, and a low completion rate often reflects an old vehicle fleet rather than owners ignoring a warning.

It also covers only the 11,835 campaigns where quarterly reporting applies. Recalls closed before 2015 are not included, so the true historical total is unknowable from this data.
