What the defect is
Equipment description: the air bag on/off switch assemblies do not provide a separate light to indicate that an air bag has been temporarily switched off or disabled. Also, the vehicle's air bag readiness indicator lamp stays on when an air bag is disabled.
What could happen
The vehicle occupant is unaware that the airbag has been switched off or disabled which could result in injury in a crash. Also, the occupant is unaware of any failure or malfunction that may be detected by the vehicle's air bag monitoring system because the air bag indicator lamp stays on when an air bag is disabled.
What gets fixed
THE MANUFACTURER HAS DISCONTINUED THE USE OF THIS ASSEMBLY AND WILL NOTIFY OWNERS TO BRING THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER TO HAVE THE SWITCH REPLACED.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 3 March 2000.
