What the defect is
Zacklift fifthwheelers manufactured between november 5, 2002, and september 15, 2003. The fifthwheeler is a removable adapter used to mount a lifting device on a fifth wheel tractor and allows the fifth wheel tractor to be temporarily converted into a two truck. Depending on the placement of the adjusting rear mounting hardware, the vehicle in tow can shift, possibly resulting in loss of control of the vehicle in tow.
What could happen
Loss of control of the tow vehicle could result in a vehicle crash, resulting in personal injury or even death.
What gets fixed
MAILING OF NOTIFICATION ALONG WITH REPLACEMENT PARTS BEGAN DECEMBER 24, 2003. ZACKLIFT WILL FOLLOW-UP WITH A TELEPHONE CALL TO ITS CUSTOMERS TO ENSURE THAT THE REPLACEMENT HARDWARE WAS INSTALLED.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 9 February 2004.
