What the defect is
Certain mb iv school buses built on ford E-450 chassis, manufactured between february 26 and may 7, 2004, with option AWB-2, was equipped with a pressure switch fitting p/n 23A200 on the power steering line to assist the power brake this fitting may leak causing loss of power steering assist.
What could happen
Loss of power steering assist may result in a vehicle crash.
What gets fixed
GIRARDIN WILL NOTIFY ITS CUSTOMERS AND EITHER REPLACE THE PRESSURE SWITCH FITTING WITH A NEW PRESSURE SWITCH FITTING P/N 23A200-REV A OR REMOVE THE DEFECTIVE PRESSURE SWITCH FITTING AND INSTALL THE "T" FITTING FREE OF CHARGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED DURING JUNE 2004.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 27 May 2004.
