- 2005 Hilbilt Peterbilt
What the defect is
Hilbilt is recalling 6 my 2005-2006 mack, my 2005 kenworth and peterbilt trucks equipped with a watson & chalin auxiliary axle. The lower cast arms could fracture which could affect the suspension's ability to lift the axle when it is not needed.
What could happen
Warnings of a situation where one side of the unit does not lift as much as the other side, a vertical vibration or erratic behavior of the suspension could occur increasing the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
HILBILT IS WORKING WITH WATSON & CHALIN TO PROVIDE OWNERS WITH REPAIR KITS ALONG WITH REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS TO THE VEHICLE OWNERS (PLEASE SEE 07E057).

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 21 August 2008.
