What the defect is
Chrysler is recalling 308 aftermarket mopar tow bar assemblies, p/n 82209758, sold during 2007 and 2008 calendar year which are used to tow model year 2007 and 2008 jeep wrangler vehicles.
What could happen
The tow bar can fail under certain driving conditions. This can result in the towed vehicle separating from the towing vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash.
What gets fixed
CHRYSLER WILL NOTIFY THE OWNERS OF ALL 2007 AND 2008 MODEL YEAR JEEP WRANGLER VEHICLES WHO COULD HAVE PURCHASED A RECALLED TOW BAR AND WILL REPLACE THE TOW BARS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 23, 2009.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 9 July 2009.
