What the defect is
Airtex is recalling 1,440 aftermarket fuel pumps, p/n E3944M, produced from january 2005 through july 2009, sold for use on model year 1997 saturn vehicles. The fuel return line and fuel vent line are reversed.
What could happen
In the event that a vehicle with the subject fuel pump is involved in a roll-over crash with a full or over-full fuel tank, the fuel could drain from the tank into the engine compartment, possibly resulting in a fire.
What gets fixed
AIRTEX WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE RECALLED FUEL PUMPS WITH A PUMP THAT HAS BEEN CORRECTLY MANUFACTURED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 15, 2009.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 24 July 2009.
