What the defect is
Pirelli tire, LLC is recalling certain metzeler ME880 marathon motorcycle tires, sizes 130/90B16 m/ctl 73H reinforced and 140/90B16 m/ctl 77H reinforced, manufactured between june 22 and september 13, 2008. These tires have a serial number that starts with a plant code of eb. These tires were stamped with incorrect load range which fails to conform to the labeling requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 119, "new pneumatic tires for motor vehicles with a GVWR of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) and motorcycles."

The purpose of this standard is to provide safe operational performance levels.
What gets fixed
METZELER WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE NONCOMPLIANT TIRES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH 2009.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 6 February 2009.
