What the defect is
Nissan diesel is recalling certain model year 1999-2010 UD3300 vehicles. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 121, "air brake systems." the brake actuation and release timing of the air brake system on these vehicles may not perform correctly.
What could happen
Operation of a vehicle with incorrect air brake apply/release timing may result in reduced braking performance without warning to the vehicle operator, which could result in a vehicle crash.
What gets fixed
THE AIR BRAKE LINE WILL BE MODIFIED. DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPAIR VEHICLES AT NO CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL FOR OWNERS OF 2008 THROUGH 2010 UD3300 VEHICLES BEGAN ON AUGUST 20, 2010. NOTIFICATION TO OWNERS OF THE 1999 THROUGH 2007 UD3300 VEHICLES IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN AT THE END OF JANUARY 2011.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 1 January 2010.
