What the defect is
North american bus industries, inc. (nabi) is recalling certain model year 2009 416 standard model floor city transit buses manufactured between october 30, 2008, and december 18, 2009. The mounting plate that holds the steering gear assembly may not have been sufficiently welded.
What could happen
An insufficient weld could lead to a separation or partial separation of the plate and cause the driver to loose proper steering control of the vehicle, possibly resulting in a crash.
What gets fixed
NABI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 26, 2010.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 14 January 2010.
