What the defect is
BMW is recalling certain 2005 through 2009 r 1200 rt police motorcycles manufactured from april 2005 through september 2009. The bracket which supports the audible signaling device can break, possibly allowing the signaling device to fall from the vehicle and onto the roadway.
What could happen
Should the signaling device fall from the motorcycle while being driven on the roadways, it could become an obstacle for other drivers which may result in a crash.
What gets fixed
DEALERS WILL ATTACH TWO TETHER CABLES TO THE DEVICE IN ORDER TO SECURE IT TO THE MOTORCYCLE IN THE EVENT THE MOUNTING BRACKET BECOMES LOOSE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 2, 2010.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 20 July 2010.
