What the defect is
Winnebago is recalling certain model year 2011 vista and itasca sunstar motor homes manufactured from march 16, 2010 through august 12, 2010. These vehicles may have the potential for a cable that powers the slideout room to make contact with the driveshaft when the slideout is retracted.
What could happen
If this cable makes contact with the driveshaft, it could wear the protective jacket and insulation off the cable exposing the conductors to the driveshaft and electrifying the chassis, which could result in personal injury or death.
What gets fixed
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A DRIVESHAFT CLOSEOUT PANEL BETWEEN THE CHASSIS FRAME RAILS TO PROTECT AND SUPPORT THE WIRE HARNESS. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2010.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 1 September 2010.
