What the defect is
Forest river is recalling certain model year 2011 sandpiper and sierra trailers equipped with dexter axles. On some axles, cracks could appear in the spindle weld.
What could happen
These cracks can propagate and cause the spindle to detach from the axle tube, resulting in the separation of the wheel end from the vehicle, creating a road hazard and/or compromising the driver's control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
What gets fixed
FOREST RIVER IS WORKING WITH DEXTER AXLE AND WILL INSPECT THE AXLE SERIAL NUMBER AND REPLACE IT IF IT FALLS WITHIN THE SERIAL NUMBER RANGE. REPLACEMENT OF THE AXLE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 6, 2011.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 8 October 2010.
