What the defect is
Dexter axle is recalling certain electric/hydraulic (e/h) brake actuator pumps sold for use on various trailers. Some of these pumps may not have been properly heat treated. This condition can cause premature wear of some critical components in these pumps which can render the unit inoperable.
What could happen
The e/h brake actuator provides braking power to the trailer brakes. Failure of the actuator can result in the loss of braking effort by the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
DEXTER AXLE IS WORKING WITH THE INSTALLERS AND VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS TO IDENTIFY AND NOTIFY OWNERS WHO MAY HAVE HAD THE AFFECTED E/H BRAKE ACTUATOR INSTALLED ON THEIR VEHICLE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 20, 2011.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 4 January 2012.
