What the defect is
Daimler trucks is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2009 sterling bullet vehicles manufactured from october 15, 2007, through november 10, 2008. The left outer tie rod end may fracture due to a misalignment condition. Under certain driving conditions, the misalignment may lead to a weakening and eventual fracture of the left outer tie rod ball stud.
What could happen
A fractured tie rod end could cause a loss of directional steering stability increasing the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
DAIMLER TRUCKS WILL NOTIFY OWNERS WITH A TWO PART LETTER REGARDING THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN AND TO INFORM OWNERS THAT THE LEFT OUTER TIE ROD END WILL BE REPLACED WHEN REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 26, 2011.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 23 March 2011.
