- 2010 LBCE HTC-3140
What the defect is
Lbce is recalling certain model year 2010 lbce model HTC-3140 cranes equipped with caterpillar diesel C15 engines. Overtime, a weld in the combustion tube that is inside of the diesel particulate filter can fail causing the filter to be burned through by hot combustion gases.
What could happen
A fire could result if these hot gases erupt near something flammable.
What gets fixed
CATERPILLAR IS HANDLING THE OWNER NOTIFICATION AND REMEDY FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. PLEASE SEE CATERPILLAR'S DEFECT REPORT 11E-006. CATERPILLAR WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING COMBUSTION TUBE WITH A THICK WALL COMBUSTION TUBE WHICH WILL NOT ALLOW THE HEAT TO BREAK THROUGH. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS WERE NOTIFIED OF THE SAFETY RECALL BY LBCE ON JUNE 2, 2011. A SECOND NOTICE WILL BE ISSUED WHEN PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE WHICH IS CURRENTLY ESTIMATED TO BE MID-AUGUST 2011.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 8 July 2011.
