What the defect is
Yamaha is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 VMX17 (v-max) motorcycles, including the yb, ycb, zr, zcr ag and acg variants, manufactured from september 2008 through april 2011. On affected motorcycles, high oil pressure can build up inside the oil pump causing it to malfunction. Oil might then stop pumping through the engine resulting in severe engine damage that can cause the engine to stall and not restart again.
What could happen
An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash with injury or death.
What gets fixed
YAMAHA DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE OIL PUMP FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 21, 2011.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 26 September 2011.
