What the defect is
Directed, LLC (Directed) is recalling certain remote start systems and interface modules. The affected devices may experience a condition that may shut down the vehicle if the on/off button on a remote start, or phone system application is depressed while the engine is on and the vehicle brake is subsequently applied.
What could happen
An engine shut down while a vehicle is in motion increases the risk of a crash due to, among other things, a sudden loss of motive power and loss of power steering and braking capability. In addition, safety systems such as air bags are deactivated, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
What gets fixed
Directed will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the vehicle software, free of charge. The recall began on July 24, 2014.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 15 July 2014.
