What the defect is
Strick Trailers, LLC (Strick) is recalling certain model year 2009-2015 Dry Freight Van Trailers manufactured April 25, 2008, to June 5, 2014. The affected trailers are equipped with rear impact guards using gusset part numbers 40033/40034, 43191/43192, 63133/63134 or 67046/67047. The rear impact guards with these gussets do not meet federal standards for strength and energy absorption. As such, these trailers do not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 223, "Rear Impact Guards."
What could happen
If the trailer is struck from behind and the rear impact guards do not meet the required standards, there is an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
What gets fixed
Strick will notify owners, and the rear impact guards of the trailers will be reinforced, free of charge. The recall began on December 5, 2014.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 10 October 2014.
