What the defect is
Kovatch Mobile Equipment Corp. (KME) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Predator SS Pumper vehicles manufactured January 17, 2015, to July 21, 2015, and 2014-2016 FDNY Pumper vehicles manufactured May 21, 2014, to July 27, 2015. The affected vehicles may have replacement drive shafts that may twist and fail during use.
What could happen
Failure of the driveshaft may leave the fire truck immobilized in traffic, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the truck may not be able to respond to an emergency, increasing the chances of injury for those at risk.
What gets fixed
KME has notified owners, and dealers replaced the drive shafts, free of charge. All affected vehicles have been remedied, free of charge.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 29 August 2016.
