What the defect is
Continental Tire the Americas, LLC. (Continental Tire) is recalling certain Continental, General, and Barum brand tires sold as original or replacement equipment. The affected tires were cured for too long during production.
What could happen
Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall resulting in sudden air loss or a belt edge separation which could lead to a tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
Continental Tire will notify the owners that purchased the tires as replacement equipment. Various vehicle manufacturers will conduct recalls for vehicles equipped with these tires at the time of purchase. The tires will be inspected to verify that they are affected, and will be replaced as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 5, 2021.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 15 February 2021.
