What the defect is
Carefree of Colorado (Carefree) is recalling certain Freestyle Gearbox Housing part number: 015933-002. The gearbox may develop cracks, causing the awning to extend unintentionally.
What could happen
An awning extending unintentionally during transit may become a distraction or road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
Carefree will provide additional support for the internal components of the Gearbox Housing, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 6, 2023.
Parts involved
- Motor Assembly, Small Box, 12V DC, Right Hand015933-002A motor which rolls and unrolls the awning, and holds the awning closed when not in use, located on the right hand side of the awning.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 7 November 2022.
