What the defect is
Motiv Power Systems, Inc. (Motiv) is recalling certain 2017-2020 F-59 school buses equipped with a Motiv Gen 4 EPIC and 2020-2023 F-59 school buses equipped with a Motiv Gen 5 EPIC powertrain. The wiring harness may be missing a heat shrink insulator and retention clip. The 12-volt control wires may deteriorate and loosen, causing a loss of connection to the high voltage (HV) batteries and drive power.

A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
Motiv field support technicians will inspect and correct or replace any 12-volt control wires showing signs of fatigue, cracking, or improper retention or protection as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 21, 2024.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 19 September 2024.
