What the defect is
When tested according to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard 301, "fuel system integrity". Ruptures in the fuel system occurred in a 30 MPH frontal collision, allowing fuel to leak. The hardware used to attach the body to the chassis failed in the test. Movement of the vehicle"s body during the collision resulted in ruptures in fuel system.
What gets fixed
ADDITIONAL HARDWARE WILL BE INSTALLED TO TIE THE REAR BODY TO THE REAR BUMPER, A SPACER WILL BE PLACED IN FRONT OF THE FUEL TANK, AND THE FUEL LINES WILL BE REROUTED TO PREVENT SHEARING. WORK WILL BE COMPLETED WITHOUT CHARGE.

A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 1 August 1984.
