What the defect is
The upper steering shaft and the steering column with a telescoping function are retained by a steel ball traveling in a machined groove. The steel ball was omitted, allowing the extension of the steering column to continue until the steering shaft disengages from the steering column.
What could happen
If the steel telescope stop ball was omitted anddisengagement of the steering shaft to the steering column occurs, complete lossof steering may result, which may cause an accident.
What gets fixed
AN INSPECTION OF THE STEERING COLUMN WILL BE MADE TO SEE IF THE TELESCOPE BALL WAS OMITTED. THE ENTIRE COLUMN WILL BE REMOVED AND A NEW PRODUCTION COLUMN WILL BE INSTALLED IF THE BALL IS MISSING.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 23 November 1993.
