What the defect is
Under high ambient temperatures (greater than 95 degrees fahrenheit) and the fuel tank level between 1/4 and 1/2 full, the fuel tank internal pressure can increase causing the tank to expand. Tank expansion causes an interference between the fuel tank protective shield and the propeller shaft resulting a hole in the fuel tank at the point of shield-to-shaft contact.
What could happen
This condition can cause fuel leakage, and if an ignition source is present, could result in a fire.
What gets fixed
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SUPPLEMENTAL FUEL TANK VENTING SYSTEM ON THESE VEHICLES.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 18 August 1995.
