What the defect is
Equipment description: century convertible child seats equipped with a central adjuster device, "a-lok" assembly, produced between april 9 and may 10, 2001, including the following models: encore (44612 gtn and 4662 wsc 01); bravo (44622 ltg, 44630 lth, 44631 pfn, and 44662 wsc); accel (45100 cht, 45100 mte, 45100 sth, 45200 lft, 45200 mxm, 45600 jti, 45600 mte, 45600 mto, 45600 mxm, 45600 saf, 45700 gsd, and 45700 lft); and smartmove (44709 mte and 44709 svr). The adjuster device allows consumers to tighten the child seat harness straps on the child.
What could happen
In the event of a vehicle crash, the a-loks on these seats may allow the webbing to slip 4 to 6 inches, which would not adequately protect the seat occupant, possibly resulting in injury or death.
What gets fixed
CENTURY WILL NOTIFY ITS CUSTOMERS AND PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT SEAT FREE OF CHARGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 18, 2001.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 2 June 2001.
