What the defect is
Bendix puraguard dl discharge line oil coalescing air filter, part numbers 5010287 (original equipment) and 801290 (aftermarket) manufactured from february 2, 2001, through april 18, 2002. Under certain extreme conditions, the oil collected in the puraguard dl can be exposed to tempatures in the discharge line of the air compressor that exceed the ignition point of the oil.
What could happen
These conditions can promote the risk of a fire in the puraguard dl product, possibly resulting in serious injury.
What gets fixed
BENDIX WILL NOTIFY ITS CUSTOMERS AND WILL REMOVE AND REPLACE THE PURAGUARD DL UNIT WITH A NEW AIR COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE LINE. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING AUGUST 2002.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 14 June 2002.
