What the defect is
Ducati is recalling 1,755 my 2009 monster 696 motorcycles. The main wiring harness may come in contact with the vertical cylinder head and exhaust pipe possibly resulting in damage to the motorcycle and a potential hazard to the rider.
What could happen
Any damage to the harness may lead to loss of functionality of the motorcycle's lighting system or an unexpected loss of engine performance, and thereby increase the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
DEALERS WILL CHECK FOR INTERFERENCE BETWEEN THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS AND THE VERTICAL CYLINDER HEAD AND EXHAUST PIPE. DEALERS WILL REPOSITION AND FASTEN THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS TO THE FRAME FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 11, 2009.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 29 April 2009.
