What the defect is
Pierce is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 fire trucks manufactured from august 13, 2009 through june 30, 2010. These vehicles may have been manufactured with excessive paint on the steel wheel mounting surfaces. The excessive paint may cause the wheel lug nuts to lose clamp load, loosen and fall off.
What could happen
Eventually the wheel(s) could separate from the vehicle and cause a crash.
What gets fixed
DEALERS WILL CHECK THE WHEEL NUT TORQUE AND TIGHTEN THE LUG NUTS TO THE RECOMMENDED TORQUE AS SPECIFIED IN THE PIERCE CUSTOM CHASSIS AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING AUGUST 2010.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 28 June 2010.
