What the defect is
Mack is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 mru and model year 2010-2011 leu vehicles, manufactured from january 1, 2009, through september 30, 2010 because the front axle may crack and fracture.
What could happen
Complete fractures can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
MACK WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND REPLACE THE AXLE BEAMS ON AFFECTED VEHICLES WHEN SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES ARE AVAILABLE. AS AN INTERIM MEASURE, A MAG PARTICLE INSPECTION WILL BE PROVIDED TO MITIGATE RISK AND IDENTIFY VEHICLES WITH CRACKED AXLE BEAMS. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN MARCH 30, 2012.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 21 February 2012.
