What the defect is
New Flyer Industries Ltd. (New Flyer) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 New Flyer XDE40 and XD40, 2014 XD60, XN35 and XN60, 2015 XDE35, and 2013-2015 XN40 transit buses. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an improperly torqued front axle center link retaining clamp on the tie rod. As a result, the tie rod may disconnect, causing a loss of steering.
What could happen
A loss of steering increases the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
New Flyer will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to verify that the center link retaining clamp is properly torqued. Any components displaying play or movement will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 1, 2015.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 4 September 2015.
