What the defect is
General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain Autoliv Front-Driver Air Bag Modules, with part numbers 20928235 and 20928242, sold as replacement parts for certain 2011-2012 GMC and Chevrolet vehicles. The driver's air bag inflator may explode during deployment, due to a manufacturing defect.
What could happen
An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.
What gets fixed
Dealers will inspect and replace the front-driver air bag module as necessary, free of charge. Letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed June 17, 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed September 28, 2022.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 19 May 2022.
