What the defect is
Certain medium duty trucks equipped with the allison series 2500 automatic transmission do not have a park position available inside the automatic transmission. These vehicles may have been assembled with an automatic transmission shift lever control assembly indicating a park position is available for selection by the vehicle operator.
What could happen
This may mislead the vehicle operator into placing the shift lever into the indicated park position and exiting the vehicle without applying the parking brake. This could cause unexpected or uncontrolled movement of the vehicle without prior warning which may result in vehicle crash.
What gets fixed
DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE FREE OF CHARGE THE SHIFT ASSEMBLY IF IT INDICATES THE INCORRECT PARK POSITION. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JANUARY 26, 2007.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 4 December 2006.
