What the defect is
Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA (Yamaha) is recalling certain model year 2015 YZFR1M motorcycles manufactured January 19, 2015, to March 23, 2015. The affected motorcycles may have been built with an improperly manufactured rear shock absorber. The nut on the damper rod for these shock absorbers may loosen, resulting in a loss of damping and the possible disassembling of the shock.
What could happen
If the damper rod nut loosens, shock absorber performance would be affected, possibly causing a loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
Yamaha will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the motorcycles and replace any affected rear shock absorbers, free of charge. The recall began on April 29, 2015.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 14 April 2015.
