What the defect is
Sutphen has notified NHTSA about a defect in certain model year 2004 through 2010 sph model fire trucks manufactured between january 2004 and january 2010, equipped with series 60 detroit diesel or C-13 caterpillar engines. Pre 2007, the detroit diesel engines were mounted low in the frame which causes vibration in the driveline. Post 2007, a new suspension and frame design caused the driveline angles of the detroit diesel and caterpillar engines to be slightly out of alignment.
What could happen
Vibration in the driveline can cause premature failure of the u-joints, increasing the risk of a crash.
What gets fixed
SUTPHEN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPAIR THE FIRE TRUCKS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 8, 2010.

Your rights
A safety recall repair is free. Under US federal law the manufacturer must fix a safety defect at no cost to you — no charge for parts, labor or diagnosis — whether or not you are the original owner. A dealer cannot charge you for recall work, and cannot require you to have bought the vehicle from them.
That entitlement is not unlimited. It applies where the vehicle was first sold less than 15 years before the recall was announced — 5 years for tires. Past that a manufacturer may still do the repair free of charge, and many do, but they are no longer obliged to. This recall was reported on 2 March 2010.
